Draksharamam is a significant pilgrimage town located in the Konaseema district, approximately 50 km southeast of Rajahmundry. Known since ancient times as a great Shaiva Kshetram, this sacred land is where Sati Devi immolated herself in the Yogagni during the Daksha Yagam.
Legend and Significance
This holy site is steeped in mythology:
Himavant (King of the Himalayas) performed penance here after accepting Shiva Deeksha.
Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Shiva here to obtain the Sudarshana Chakra. Legend says that when Vishnu offered 1,000 lotuses, Shiva hid one to test his devotion. Lord Vishnu famously plucked out his own lotus-like eye to replace the missing flower, earning the name "Kamalaksha" by Shiva’s grace.
Sage Agastya praised this place as "Dakshina Kashi" (The Varanasi of the South).
On the banks of the Sapta Godavari (seven ponds) within the temple complex, devotees can view the Swayambhu (self-manifested) Lord Sri Bhimeswara Swamy and Sri Manikyamba Devi, one of the 18 Shakti Peethas (Ashtadasa Shakti Peetha). The guardian deity (Kshetra Palaka) of this shrine is Sri Lakshmi Narayana.
Historically, the Telugu land was known as Trilinga Desam (Land of Three Lingas), and the Sri Bhimeswara Linga is one of these three powerful Lingas. It is also renowned as one of the Pancharama Kshetras.
The Story of Sage Vyasa
According to legend, when Goddess Annapurna banished Sage Vyasa from Kashi (Varanasi), a cursed and sorrowful Vyasa left the city with 10,000 disciples upon the order of Kashi Visweswara. He traveled to Draksharamam to serve Sri Bhimeswara Swamy. Sage Agastya introduced Vyasa to the Bhima Mandalam region. It is said that Vyasa viewed the entire Bhima Mandalam from the sky. The famous poet Srinatha described Vyasa's journey in his literary work, Bhimeswara Puranam.
Literary Importance
The poetic work "Bhimakhandam," written by the great poet Srinatha, is dedicated to Draksharamam. This text details the greatness of the Bhima Mandalam and the spiritual merit (Phala Shruti) of visiting it. When viewed from the sky, the 108 Paada Shiva Kshetras located within the Bhima Mandalam appear in the shape of a lotus.
History of Saints
Draksharamam has long been a home for great Shaivite devotees. In 1120 AD, Sri Mallikarjuna Panditaradhya was born here to Bhimana Panditu (the main priest of the 12th-century Bhimeswara temple) and Gouramba. He became famous as a great Veera Shaiva Acharya and poet, renowned as one of the Shaiva Kavitrayam (Trinity of Shaiva Poets).
It is believed that a visit to Draksharamam destroys all sins and bestows all prosperity. Devotees perform Archana, Abhishekam, and Annadanam here to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.
